Utility Connections in Yorkshire
Air Utilities delivers electricity, gas and water connections across Yorkshire, from city centre regeneration in Leeds and Sheffield through to housing and industrial schemes in York, Harrogate, Hull and the wider region. We work with Northern Powergrid, Northern Gas Networks, Cadent and Yorkshire Water as a NERS, GIRS and WIRS accredited Independent Connection Provider, delivering all three utilities under one contract rather than leaving you to run three separate programmes.
Utility Connections Across Yorkshire
Yorkshire covers a genuinely wide range of development types, and the connection challenges vary just as widely.
Leeds and Sheffield carry dense urban regeneration where existing networks are heavily loaded and space for new infrastructure is tight. Hull and the Humber bring industrial and logistics development at a different scale entirely. York, Harrogate and the surrounding towns produce steady residential growth, while large parts of North Yorkshire are rural enough that the nearest usable point of connection may be a long way from the site boundary.
We deliver across all of it: residential developments, commercial and industrial schemes, logistics and distribution, EV charging infrastructure, and coordinated multi utility packages where electricity, gas and water go into one trench.
Electricity, Northern Powergrid
Northern Powergrid is the Distribution Network Operator for Yorkshire, operating through Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire) plc. Across its full area covering the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire, it delivers power to more than 8 million people across around 3.9 million homes and businesses, over a network spanning some 9,650 square miles, with more than 63,000 substations and roughly 60,000 miles of overhead line and underground cable.
If you are reading older documentation, the Yorkshire licence was formerly Yorkshire Electricity Distribution plc, or YEDL. The network and the licence area are unchanged.
Two practical points worth knowing. Northern Powergrid operates a dedicated point of connection application route specifically for ICPs and IDNOs, which is the channel we use rather than the standard customer process. And it provides SafeDig, a service giving accurate maps of its underground cables, which is a genuinely useful early check before any design is committed.
Gas, Northern Gas Networks, and Cadent in South Yorkshire
This is the detail most guides to Yorkshire get wrong, so it is worth stating clearly.
Northern Gas Networks distributes gas across most of Yorkshire, along with the North East, northern Lincolnshire and parts of Cumbria, serving roughly 2.6 million customers through around 37,000 kilometres of pipeline. It is headquartered at Thorpe Park in Leeds, inside the region it serves, and Ofgem benchmarking has rated it strongly on total cost efficiency.
But South Yorkshire is on the Cadent network, not NGN. This is a historical boundary rather than a recent change: most of modern South Yorkshire was never part of the old North Eastern Gas Board area, and it sits within Cadent’s licence today. The 2022 gas supply outage in Sheffield, for instance, occurred on the Cadent network.
If your site is in Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley or Doncaster, confirming which gas network actually covers the address before applying will save you a wasted application. Getting this wrong is one of the easier ways to lose several weeks in this region.
Water, Yorkshire Water
Yorkshire Water serves West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, the East Riding, most of North Yorkshire, part of North Lincolnshire and some areas of Derbyshire.
As a WIRS accredited self lay provider, we lay new water mains and make service connections ourselves rather than waiting for Yorkshire Water to do it, which brings the lower published connection charge into play and lets water share a trench with your other utilities.
What Is Happening on the Network Here
Northern Powergrid is investing in local network capacity across the region, including work at Stourton in Leeds aimed specifically at improving resilience and unlocking capacity for future growth. Where that kind of investment sits near your site, capacity that is not available today may become available on a known timescale, and the point of connection enquiry is what tells you whether that applies to you.
On the gas side, Northern Gas Networks runs some of the most advanced hydrogen work in the country, including the HyDeploy project and the H21 Leeds City Gate study. For most developments today this changes nothing practical. For long horizon industrial schemes, it is useful context on where the regional gas network is heading.

Why Developers in Yorkshire Work With Us
- We know the gas boundary. The Northern Gas Networks and Cadent split across Yorkshire catches out providers who treat the region as a single network. Knowing which side of it your site sits on before applying is the sort of detail that quietly protects a programme.
- Accredited across all three schemes. NERS, GIRS and WIRS, administered independently by Lloyd’s Register. Few providers hold all three, which is what allows a genuine single contract multi utility package.
- More than 1,000 connections delivered. Across England, for contractors, developers and homeowners.
- 30 plus specialists, most directly employed. Our own engineers and project managers, supported by trusted delivery partners for specialist scopes.
- One point of contact. We handle Northern Powergrid, Northern Gas Networks, Cadent and Yorkshire Water on your behalf.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which electricity network covers Yorkshire?
Northern Powergrid is the Distribution Network Operator for Yorkshire, operating as Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire) plc. Across its full area including the North East and northern Lincolnshire it serves around 3.9 million homes and businesses. The Yorkshire licence was formerly Yorkshire Electricity Distribution, or YEDL.
Which gas network covers Yorkshire?
Most of Yorkshire is served by Northern Gas Networks, which is headquartered in Leeds and also covers the North East, northern Lincolnshire and parts of Cumbria. However, South Yorkshire sits on the Cadent network rather than NGN. If your site is in Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley or Doncaster, it is worth confirming which network covers the address before applying.
Which water company serves Yorkshire?
Yorkshire Water covers West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, the East Riding, most of North Yorkshire, part of North Lincolnshire and some areas of Derbyshire. As a WIRS accredited self lay provider we can lay the mains and service connections ourselves, which brings the lower published connection charge into play.
Do you cover the whole of Yorkshire?
Yes. We work across West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and the East Riding and Humber, including Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, Hull, York and Harrogate, as well as the rest of England.
How long does a utility connection take in Yorkshire?
As a general guide, a straightforward connection runs somewhere between 8 and 20 weeks from application to energisation, and longer where network reinforcement is required. Dense urban sites in Leeds and Sheffield and rural sites in North Yorkshire produce quite different answers, which the point of connection enquiry will confirm.
Can you connect electricity, gas and water together?
Yes. Holding NERS, GIRS and WIRS means we deliver all three under one contract, coordinated into one programme and, where the design allows, one shared trench. On a multi utility scheme this is usually where the largest saving sits.
