Gas Outlet Pipework Installation

Air Utilities installs gas outlet pipework across England, the installation pipework that carries gas from your meter to every appliance on site. A new gas connection ends at the meter; from there, correctly sized, safely routed and properly tested pipework is what actually gets gas to your boilers, kitchens, plant and heating. We design, size, install, test and commission gas outlet pipework for commercial and domestic premises, all carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers to the relevant IGEM and British Standard requirements.

What Is Gas Outlet Pipework?

Gas outlet pipework, also called installation pipework, is everything downstream of the meter: the pipes, joints and fittings that carry gas from the outlet of your primary meter to each appliance. It is distinct from the gas connection itself, which brings the supply from the network to the meter. In simple terms, there are two halves to getting gas to an appliance:

  • The connection and meter (the network side, up to and including the meter)
  • The outlet pipework (everything from the meter outlet onward, to the appliances)

Air Utilities delivers both, so a new gas connection and the pipework that makes it usable are handled by one team, rather than leaving you to arrange the pipework separately after the connection is in.

Gas Outlet Pipework Services

  • Installation pipework design and sizing from meter to appliance
  • Commercial and industrial gas pipework to IGEM/UP/2
  • Domestic installation pipework to BS 6891
  • Carcassing for new builds, first and second fix
  • Appliance connections for boilers, kitchens, plant and heating
  • Steel, copper and MDPE pipework as the installation requires
  • Tightness testing and purging to IGEM/UP/1 standards
  • Commissioning and Gas Safe certification

Correct Sizing: Why It Matters

The single most important thing about outlet pipework is that it is sized correctly. Pipework that is too small starves appliances of gas, causes pressure drop and can make equipment unsafe or unreliable; oversized pipework wastes money.

Correct sizing means calculating the demand of every appliance, applying diversity (because not all appliances run at once), and sizing each pipe run so the pressure drop stays within the permitted limit, no more than 1 mbar across the whole installation, while keeping gas velocity within safe limits. On larger installations this is verified with an index test, which checks the pressure at the most demanding point in the system. We size every installation properly to these standards, so your appliances get the gas they need.

Domestic and Commercial Pipework

The standards and qualifications required depend on the scale of the installation, and it is a genuine safety and legal distinction, not just a label.

Where domestic appliances are installed at a commercial scale, for example multiple boilers in a plant room totalling over 70kW, the work legally requires commercial qualifications regardless of the appliance type. All our gas work is carried out by appropriately qualified Gas Safe registered engineers for the scale of the installation.

Safety, Testing and Compliance

Gas outlet pipework is safety-critical, and it is a criminal offence for anyone not Gas Safe registered to work on it. Every installation we complete is:

  • Designed and sized to IGEM/UP/2 (commercial) or BS 6891 (domestic)
  • Pressure and tightness tested to IGEM/UP/1 before connection to the supply
  • Purged safely on commissioning
  • Certified by a Gas Safe registered engineer

This applies to the pipework downstream of the meter, up to 2 bar operating pressure, in line with the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.

Gas Connection and Outlet Pipework Together

Because Air Utilities delivers gas connections as well as outlet pipework, we can take a project from the network all the way to a working appliance under one contract:

  1. 1

    Connection and meter

The new gas connection and meter, the network side.

  2. 2

    Outlet pipework

The outlet pipework from the meter to every appliance.

  3. 3

    Testing and commissioning

Testing, purging and commissioning of the whole installation.

This avoids the common gap where a connection is completed but the pipework is a separate job that holds up commissioning. One team, one programme, gas at the appliance.

How Long Does Gas Outlet Pipework Take?

Timescales depend entirely on the size and complexity of the installation, from a short appliance connection to a full commercial plant room and distribution system. A straightforward domestic or light commercial installation can often be completed quickly once the design is agreed, while larger commercial pipework with multiple appliances and plant takes longer. Because the pipework is what finally makes a connection usable, we plan it alongside the connection so it does not become a bottleneck at commissioning.

Our Gas Outlet Pipework Process

  1. 1

    Survey and design

We assess the appliances, layout and demand, and design the pipework to the relevant standard.

  2. 2

    Sizing

We size every pipe run for correct pressure and velocity, applying diversity across the appliances.

  3. 3

    Installation

Our Gas Safe registered engineers install the pipework in steel, copper or MDPE as required.

  4. 4

    Testing and purging

We tightness test and purge the installation to IGEM/UP/1 before it goes live.

  5. 5

    Commissioning and certification

We commission the appliances and issue Gas Safe certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a gas connection and outlet pipework?

A gas connection brings the supply from the network to your meter. Outlet pipework, also called installation pipework, is everything downstream of the meter that carries gas to your appliances. Air Utilities delivers both, so the connection and the pipework that makes it usable are handled by one team.

Who is allowed to install gas outlet pipework?

Only a Gas Safe registered engineer, with qualifications appropriate to the scale of the installation. Domestic qualifications cover smaller work up to a U16 meter; larger commercial and plant-room installations require non-domestic (commercial) Gas Safe qualifications. It is a criminal offence to work on gas pipework without registration.

Why does pipe sizing matter?

Pipework that is too small starves appliances of gas and causes pressure drop, which can make equipment unsafe or unreliable. Correct sizing keeps pressure drop within 1 mbar across the installation and gas velocity within safe limits, so every appliance gets the gas it needs. We size every installation to IGEM/UP/2 or BS 6891.

What is a tightness test?

A tightness test checks that a gas installation has no leaks by pressurising the pipework and confirming the pressure holds. It is a mandatory step, carried out to IGEM/UP/1, before new pipework is connected to the supply. We test and purge every installation before commissioning.

Do you install pipework for commercial kitchens and plant rooms?

Yes. We design and install commercial and industrial gas pipework to IGEM/UP/2, including plant rooms and commercial kitchens, carried out by engineers with the correct non-domestic Gas Safe qualifications.

Can you do the connection and the pipework together?

Yes, and it is the most efficient route. Because we deliver both the gas connection and the outlet pipework, we take the project from the network to a working appliance under one contract, avoiding the gap where a completed connection waits on separate pipework.
